The (secondary reason) was for greater accessibility to commands on the screen although no doubt most accessibility programs allow use of icons and pointers these days.
However the main menu commands along the top bar are accessible by keystrokes and so it would seem sensible and allow quicker work that commands/functions controlled from the sidebar are also accessible by keystrokes.
