The Carousel would be more useful if it was possible to click on an image and be taken either to the catalogue entry, or to include a caption or reference number with each image.

There is no point in being able to search if you cannot save the results of that search(es) and do something with the data. This could work in a similar way to My Items in document ordering, but would be preferable not to have to log in to do this.
